The Fingerprints of God: Trusting the God Who Is Always at Work

Life rarely unfolds the way we expect. Dreams are interrupted, plans change, relationships become strained, and seasons of hardship often leave us wondering what God is doing. In those moments, it can be tempting to believe that He has forgotten us. Yet the life of Joseph tells a very different story. Even through betrayal, slavery, false accusation, imprisonment, and years of waiting, God's hand never left him. The fingerprints of God were present in every chapter of Joseph's life, accomplishing a greater purpose than he could yet see.
God Is Present in Every Season
Joseph's life was marked by dramatic highs and lows. Favored by his father, he was soon hated by his brothers, thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned for crimes he did not commit. From a human perspective, it appeared that everything was going wrong. Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us of one unchanging truth: "The Lord was with Joseph" (Genesis 39:2, 21).
We are reminded that God's presence is not dependent on our circumstances. Whether Joseph was serving in Potiphar's house or sitting in an Egyptian prison, God had not abandoned him. In fact, the Lord was actively working through every trial to accomplish His perfect plan.
The same promise belongs to every believer today. God has not promised an easy life, but He has promised His presence. Even when we cannot see what He is doing, we can trust that He has not stopped working.
God's Purposes Are Greater Than Our Perspective
One of the great themes of Joseph's story is God's sovereign providence. What Joseph's brothers intended for evil, God intended for good.
Years later, Joseph could look back over every painful chapter of his life and say, "God sent me before you to preserve life" (Genesis 45:5). What once appeared to be meaningless suffering became the very means by which God preserved His covenant people during a devastating famine.
This does not mean that evil actions become good, nor does it minimize the pain Joseph endured. Rather, it magnifies God's ability to accomplish His perfect purposes even through sinful human actions.
Romans 8:28 reminds believers that God causes all things to work together for good for those who love Him. Often we cannot see that purpose in the moment, but Joseph's life encourages us to trust God's wisdom even when His plans remain hidden.
Give God the Glory
Another striking feature of Joseph's life is his consistent humility. Whenever opportunities arose for recognition, Joseph continually directed the praise back to God.
Standing before Pharaoh, Joseph did not boast about his own abilities. Instead, he declared that God alone would give the interpretation of the dreams. Throughout his life, Joseph recognized that every opportunity, every success, and every blessing ultimately came from the Lord.
Our natural tendency is to celebrate our own accomplishments. Scripture calls us to something far greater—to recognize God's fingerprints on every good gift and give Him the honor, credit, and glory He alone deserves. Whether He answers a prayer, opens a door, or sustains us through difficulty, every blessing points us back to His faithfulness.
Forgiveness Trusts God's Justice
Perhaps the greatest display of God's work in Joseph's life came through his response to his brothers.
After years of suffering at their hands, Joseph had every human reason to seek revenge. Instead, he chose forgiveness. His famous words in Genesis 50:20 continue to encourage believers today: "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good."
Joseph understood that God was the righteous Judge. Because he trusted God's sovereign purposes, he was free to release bitterness and extend grace.
Forgiveness is never easy. It is a deliberate act of faith that entrusts justice to God rather than taking it into our own hands. As those who have been forgiven through Christ, we are called to extend that same grace to others, even when the wounds are deep.
Seeing God's Fingerprints Today
Joseph's story reminds us that God's providence often becomes clearest when we look back rather than when we look ahead. The God who guided Joseph through every disappointment is the same God who faithfully leads His people today.
You may be walking through uncertainty, waiting for answers, or carrying wounds that seem slow to heal. Like Joseph, you may not yet understand why God has allowed certain trials. Yet His promises remain unchanged. He is with His people. He is accomplishing His good purposes. He is worthy of all glory. And He is able to give grace to forgive as we have been forgiven.
When life seems confusing, look for the fingerprints of God. Though His hand may be unseen, it is never absent. He is faithfully writing a story that will ultimately magnify His glory and accomplish His perfect purposes in the lives of His children.
